Scientists have studied the effects of salt on nylon because nylon is used for many industrial purposes like automotive parts. However, one of the applications that came from that research is that through the use of salt you can actually increase the strength and flexibility of the nylon used to make pantyhose.
In a study by Siegmann and Zipora, the team of scientists exposed nylon to a salt solution. They found that the nylon actually absorbed the salt at a molecular level and that the weight of the nylon increased even after rinsing off the salt solution. Further measurements showed that the nylon molecular chains became stronger and that the salt interfered with the hydrogen bonding to also make the nylon more flexible.
How to Make Your Pantyhose Last Longer By Using Salt
Now that you understand the science behind exposing nylon to salt, you can now strengthen your nylon pantyhose. Simply fill a jug or pot with warm water and add about a 1/4 cup of salt and dissolve it. The exact amount of salt and the temperature of the water isn’t that crucial. It’s just important that you expose your pantyhose to dissolved salt in water. Completely soak your pantyhose in the salt solution overnight to allow the chemical reaction to take place. In the morning, rinse them in plain cold water to rinse off the excess salt water and hang them to dry.
Taking Care of Your New Salt Strengthened Pantyhose
Do not wash your pantyhose in hot water because the heat can destabilize the salt enhanced nylon chains. Wash them in cold water and always hang them to dry. Never dry your pantyhose in the dryer as the heat will again destabilize the nylon. Some women report that their pantyhose can last up to 4 times longer than normal!
